Nippon launches Hakugei, the second Taigei-class submarine

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has launched the second within the new Taigei-class, the latest charm of advanced diesel-electric submarines for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Named Hakugei, or White Whale, the initial submarine was launched at Kawasaki Heavy Industries shipyard within a city of Kobe.

The construction of the second Taigei-class submarine began in January 2019. It will now proceed through final construction and es trials before commissioning directly into JMSDF, which is scheduled with respect to March 2023.

The Hakugei is a 8, 000-ton, diesel-electric attack submarine measuring 84 meters (275 feet) long, being unfaithful. 1 meters wide, in addition to the designed for long-range operations through the Pacific. It was previously known as the 29SS class, named after most of the 29th year of Chief Akihito’s reign in Okazaki, japan.

Japan sent out the first of the new diesel-electric submarine class, the Taigei , in October 2020 as well as the began sea trials within July this year and is expected to be commissioned in 1 2022.

A Taigei class is a original class of attack submarines developed as a successor to go to the Sōryū class. These panache submarines are equipped with a large amount of lithium-ion batteries, as is the case of this last two submarines of the Sōryū class (Ōryū and Tōryū ), making it possible for the submersible to travel longer and at taller speeds underwater than customary diesel-electric submarines.

The use of lithium-ion batteries on submarines is considered to require less maintenance as well as being capable of longer endurance at their high speeds while immersed compared to lead-acid batteries. These products allow to increase the hanging around range of submarines and win back part of the internal space.
